Blog investigation 2/6
For my Game Show film, I want to make it look like it was filmed on tape or a VHS effect. I always wanted to make something that would go good with the effect of old camera footage with it. For this investigation, I look into different tutorials and ways to make my clips look like they were recorded on a VHS tape. In order to achieve a VHS look in Premiere Pro, you need to combine many effects. You may easily fine-tune and personalize these effects to achieve the desired retro style.
Lumetri Color is the first effect we'll utilize. We can use Lumetri Color to make some basic adjustments to the Contrast and White values. Then, using the Faded Film, Curves, and Vignette options, we can make a range of creative alterations. Lumetri Color is fantastic since it allows us to achieve the desired color tone with only one effect.
The Channel Blur effect will be required next. The footage has a distinctive VHS look thanks to Channel Blur. It functions similarly to a Gaussian Blur but allows us to blur each color channel separately (red, green, and blue.) We can "bleed" colors together and push them "outside of the lines" because we can blur single color channels. To further tailor the effect, use multiple copies of Channel Blur with varied Blur Dimensions. We can add over-exaggerated contrast to the edges and fine details of our film by using the Unsharp Mask effect. This gives our footage an antiquated "digitally sharpened" appearance. To get the look you want, change the Radius option. You have two options for adding noise to your footage. The first option is to use Premiere's Noise effect. When set to a low value, this can provide fantastic "filmic" results. A VHS or film grain overlay is the second choice. (An example is supplied in the project file.) Simply place this clip over your footage, select Overlay as the blending mode, and adjust the opacity as needed.
Setting the aspect ratio to 4:3 will give you an authentic VHS look. A 4:3 picture overlay on top of 16:9 footage is my preferred option. You can, however, change the Sequence settings to 4:3. If you utilize this strategy, it's recommended a frame size of 1440x1080 pixels.
